The insulation industry is full of jargon; here are a few terms to help you understand the ABCs about insulating and improving the energy efficiency of your home or business.

Absorption

Transformation of radiant energy to a different form of energy by interaction with matter.

Baffles

Device to maintain a ventilation space between the insulation and roof deck, assuring air flow from the eave/soffit vents to ridge vent or other roof vents provided in attics and cathedral ceilings.

Cavity

The empty space between studs or joists typically filled with insulation.

Damming

The use of a substance to support fire stopping materials until cured.

Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM)

A special type of mortgage that takes into account the monthly operating cost savings realized by living in an energy-efficient home, thereby enabling mortgage underwriting guidelines to be adjusted to reflect the economic effect of lower monthly payments for energy.

Fire Resistance

The property of a material or assembly to withstand fire or give protection. It is characterized by the ability to confine a fire and to continue to perform a given structural function.

Gable Vents

A louver vent mounted in the top of the gable to allow the passage of air through the attic. (The hole near the pointy part of the wall.)

Home Audit or Energy Audit

An assessment performed by an energy specialist in order to identify how a structure's energy efficiency can be improved. Many incentives or rebates require an audit be conducted before and after the improvements in order to verify savings.

Insulate

To cover with a material of low conductivity in order to reduce the passage or leakage of heat, reduce the surface temperature, or reduce the noise emanating from the object.

Joint

The place where two adjacent pieces of material or jacketing meet. They may be overlapped, sealed, filled (pointed) or finished by the application of tape, cement, mastic, coatings, additional layer of insulation materials or other compounds.

Kraft-Faced Vapor Retarder

Created by coating kraft paper with a thin layer of asphalt adhesive. The coated side of the kraft paper is then applied to the unfaced insulation material. The asphalt adhesive bonds the kraft paper and the insulation together, which acts as a vapor retarder. Because they are flammable, kraft-faced vapor retarders are combustible and should never be left exposed in a building.

Loose-Fill Insulation

Insulation in granular, nodular, fibrous, powdery or similar form designed to be installed by pouring, blowing or hand placement.

Mineral Fiber

Insulation composed principally of fibers manufactured from glass, roc or slag, or glass, with or without binders.

Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)

A single number rating, the arithmetic average of the individual sound absorption coefficients of a material at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz to the nearest .05.

Open Cell Foam

A material comprised predominantly of interconnecting cellular voids.

Perm/Perm rating

The measure of vapor transmission in grains of water through one square foot of a membrane in an hour at 1-inch mercury pressure difference.

R-Value

Measure of resistance to heat flow. Insulation materials have tiny pockets of trapped air. These pockets resist the transfer of heat through material. The ability of insulation to slow the transfer of heat is measured in R-values. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation material's ability to resist the flow of heat through it. The Federal Trade Commission prohibits expressing R-value in terms of inches, because R-value is not a linear measurement. R-values can be added together for a total system R-value.

Sealant

Sealants in insulation function primarily as water and vapor seals. They may also be used as adhesives, and for expansion joints for metal, masonry, cellular glass, etc. They must exhibit low shrinkage, excellent adhesion and permanent flexibility.

Thermal Insulation

Insulation applicable within the general temperature range of 300 F to 1800 F. A material or assembly of materials used to provide resistance to heat flow.

Underwriters Laboratories. An independent materials testing company. UL provides testing, evaluation, and listing services for products having specific safety-related features. UL test standards generally are similar to ASTM International standards when both exist.

Vapor Retarder

Helps control the amount of moisture passing through the insulation and collecting inside exterior walls, ceilings and floors. It is rated in perms ("permeance"). The lower the perm rating, the better the water vapor permeance. A vapor retarder should have a perm rating no greater than 1.0.

Weather Barrier

A breather jacket or coating which allows passage of water vapor and protects from atmospheric conditions.

When You Build it Tight You Have to Ventilate Right

If changes are made to an existing home in terms of tightening the building envelope and you see changes other than your utility bills going down, pay attention to the details because they may be a warning sign that you have not properly ventilated the home.

Lack of adequate ventilation in a home can result in serious problems. The more obvious one that appears in obvious places is elevated humidity. If you are sweating the inside of new insulated glass windows in the winter when you didn’t before then your interior humidity has gone too high. Another warning sign is dirt stripes appearing on the walls in front of the studs. Musty odors, sweating or condensation, or unusual patterns on your walls could be indications of a ventilation problem.

However, moisture is not the only concern. You also need to be concerned about gas concentrations in the air because of the dangers associated with them and the build up of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are emitted from many products that exist around the home but if you tighten up a home and don’t provide adequate fresh air, they are now being trapped within the home. Many volatile organic compounds breakdown with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light outside the home – formaldehyde for example has a half-life of about 14 days – but inside the home UV light is diminished and so has little affect on the concentration of the VOCs. VOCs could be coming off of products which you would never suspect. For example, some citric acid cleaners that smell like orange can have amazingly high VOC concentrations. Remember, what has changed in the equation is the amount of fresh air that had been there before that helped evacuate these things from the home. The standard furnace filters we employ do not filter out gasses – they filter particles.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (AHRAE)has very specific guidelines on how much fresh air is needed for a healthy environment. ASHRAE 62.1 references the calculations for commercial buildings and ASHRAE 62.2 is for residential buildings. It is critical to review these guidelines in order to properly ventilate the building envelope especially if you are making changes. When homes are tightened for energy efficiency you must make sure that adequate fresh air ventilation is taken into consideration. There are many ways to do this that are compliant with the ASHRAE recommendations. And remember, if you find signs of moisture it’s like the canary keeling over in the coal mine. Heed the warning!

Staying Safe on the Jobsite: OSHA 10 Training

Safety has always been a main focus for all of us at Kinzler Companies. In fact last week marked one full year without a lost time accident. We pride ourselves in being as safe as possible, yet we wanted to be sure we are all aware of how safety saves time, money, and most importantly lives.

Kinzler Companies recently instituted a policy that requires all employees that visit a jobsite to be OSHA 10 certified within 6 months of employment. By having our employees go through the OSHA 10 training we can assure we are using the proper practices for our industry.

We had just short of 30 employees attend the February’s training sessions, and many came away with a better understanding of why we take the extra precautions and why it is important to be safe at all times. The employees that attended were able to gain a better understanding of the rules we need to work by. The topics covered included everything from how many steps of a ladder need to be above a platform to how to be properly tied off with safety harnesses.

The class was very interactive. Attendees were encouraged to express their opinions and were asked tough questions by the instructor, which helped keep the environment interesting and entertaining. It is ‘safe’ to say we all came away with a much better understanding of why employees and employers need to make safety their number one priority.

What is an ice dam and how can I stop them?

Since being founded in 2006, ATFI has focused its business on spray foam insulation installation for residential new construction in the Greater Des Moines Area. Being a licensed Icynene® dealer has afforded ATFI’s sales manager, Case Brendeland, with valuable experience and knowledge of the Icynene® insulation systems. In addition to the Icynene® systems, Case has had the opportunity to work with a myriad of spray foam product brands and applications.

For these reasons, Kinzler is excited to bring Case on board as an addition to our sales team. His knowledge and experience will allow us to better serve our customers and local builders.

Kinzler Construction Services was recently involved in the construction of Aviva USA's new West Des Moines headquarters which received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold building certification.

Kinzler construction was instrumental in the overall energy efficiency of the building envelop by applying 3 inches of closed cell spray foam on all of the 9 story building's precast exterior walls from June of 2009 to May of 2010.

The closed cell spray foam not only provides maximum energy efficiency with its air sealing properties, but it also provides superior indoor air quality by eliminating random air leakage which can contain allergens and pollutants. With the capability to control their indoor environment, Aviva's employees will be both healthier and more comfortable.

Kinzler Achieves Gold ABC Safety Training Award

Waukee – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Iowa today announced that Kinzler Construction Services, Inc. has achieved the gold level of ABC’s Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program.

To achieve ABC’s STEP platinum level, among other requirements, a company must have a total recordable incident rate 25 percent below the industry average in one of the past three years, submit their official U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration form on work-related injuries and illness, and secure a declaration from their insurance company that supports the company's STEP self-evaluation score.

“It truly is an honor and a privilege to be able to recognize Kinzler Construction Services, Inc. for their continued dedication to providing training and safe workplaces for their employees,” said ABC President and CEO Kirk Pickerel. “These companies have used the STEP program to evaluate and build upon already stellar safety programs and become leaders in training and incident prevention. Indeed, these companies continue to strive for our most important goal, to send every construction industry employee home safe to their families, every day.”

STEP was established in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety Committee to assist ABC member contractors in evaluating and improving corporate safety practices and recognize outstanding safety training efforts. STEP awards are presented annually in four categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each year, more than 2,000 contractors of various sizes participate in the STEP program.
