Waterproofing is a fundamental part of constructing a building envelope. Though roofing materials are designed to be water-resistant, the roof covering materials, siding, foundations, and all penetrations in the building surfaces must be water-resistant and on occasion waterproof. A building or structure is waterproofed by using “membranes” and “coatings” to protect their contents and maintain the integrity of the structure itself. These membrane systems come in a variety of styles including felt or tar paper with asphalt or tar, bituminous waterproofing, hypalon, EPDM rubber, polyvinyl chloride, and liquid roofing among others.
