The Sunset Rule was a rule I imposed on myself many years ago after a call from a good customer. He called me out of frustration, agitated that he had not been called back by my salesman for a couple of days. The customer was a long-time relationship of mine and asked if he could work directly with me since his assigned salesman didn’t seem to care about him. I had a conversation with this salesman in our organization asking why he hadn’t called the customer back. The salesman had two or three reasons important to him for why he was too busy to make this call. The salesman’s first excuse was that he “didn’t have an answer for him yet,” so communication was suspended.
When a customer, co-worker, friend, or family member contacts you, make time by the end of each day to respond before the sun sets. You may need to prioritize your responses. Friends and family will understand that your response on a work day will need to be during a break or after work. Customers and co-workers deserve and expect a more immediate response by text, email or call, even if that response is simply to let them know you’re working on an answer. I have always done my best to stick to this rule and to advocate company-wide that we all adopt the Sunset Rule.
The Sunset Rule is an act of respect and diligence and is a key component to having great relationships. This simple discipline of getting back to people has truly been a key to success in my personal life and at Kinzler.
Paper Source is a premier paperie and gift retailer, opening a new location at a former work-out facility in St. Paul, Minnesota. When their contractor, Tom Hammer Construction, removed the flooring during renovations, they discovered that the floor was uneven, full of holes, and in some areas, 1 1/2″- 2″ below the original floor.
Kinzler Construction Services solved their problem by installing USG Durock™ Brand Quik-Top™ Self-Leveling Underlayment. This flooring sets and dries extremely quickly, minimizing downtime – ideal for commercial and institutional repair and renovation projects. This solution kept the contractor on schedule and everyone was very pleased with how the flooring turned out!

Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and Vertical Endeavors is one of the recognized leaders in the industry, operating some of the largest indoor climbing facilities in the nation. When they started work renovating a warehouse in Bloomington, MN to become a new climbing facility, they called on Kinzler Construction Services to take insulation installation to new heights — literally. The roof of the warehouse where the tallest climbing walls will be are 63 feet in the air! Kinzler crews mobilized quickly.
A team from Kinzler’s Minneapolis branch used an articulating lift to spray closed cell foam insulation on the roof and walls. Closed cell spray foam was a great choice because it acts as a water vapor and air barrier plus has an R-value of 6 per inch. And since the foam will be left exposed, we painted the foam with an intumescent paint.
Dahlstrom Real Estate needed a flooring solution for their new 8-unit apartment in Cedar Falls, IA, which would satisfy fire rating requirements and reduce sound between units. They hired Kinzler Construction Services to install Levelrock 2500 gypsum concrete underlayment. Gypsum concrete is a building material used as a floor underlayment in wood-frame and concrete construction for fire ratings, sound reduction, radiant heating, and floor leveling.
Kinzler crews installed 1 ½” Levelrock 2500 gypsum concrete underlayment over 2-1/2″ poly-styrene. The substrate was precast floor and wood subfloor on the 2nd and 3rd floor.
