Roof Design Can Improve Your Home’s Energy Flow
Cocoon project published in Energy Design Update:
There is a consensus in the building science community supporting fully vented, pitched attic assemblies as the most durable roofs; roofs which offer both the lowest cost and highest R-value when no ductwork or major air leakage are above or in the ceiling plane. If we take this consensus and expand it, how should we approach existing roofs? When homes are ready for a new roof or an energy retrofit, are there ways to maximize opportunities for insulation, air sealing, and roof deck ventilation?
